Building a deck out of UPM ProFi is not difficult. Check our
10 Golden rules for installing and maintaining UPM ProFi Deck. Before installing, see our video and read the guides below.
FOUNDATION ALTERNATIVES
UPM ProFi support rails: firm flat surface with good drainage e.g. concrete or stone aggregate
Durable timber joists: as a solid load-bearing frame i.e. 45 mm x 145 mm / 50 mm x 150 mm.
|
SPACING
Maximum recommended spacing is 400 mm from centre to centre with both UPM ProFi support rails and timber joists.
|
EXPANSION GAPS
All composite decks expand and contract with temperature changes, which must be taken into account when designing a deck.
As an approximate guide, when a deck is being built during a normal European spring or summer (i.e. above +10 ºC), it is recommended to leave a 6 mm gap for expansion in normal board lengths (i.e. 3m and longer).
In strong sunshine, darker coloured boards will reach higher temperatures than lighter coloured boards.
|
HARMONIZING EXPANSION DIRECTION IN LARGE TERRACES
Special care should be taken in large terraces where decking boards are placed end to end. In the middle of each deck board, one screw should be fixed directly through the bottom tongue of the deck board into the support rail. This allows the normal thermal expansion and contraction to happen whilst at the same time ensuring that the board remains in the same place and that the gaps at either end stay constant. This only needs to be done on one edge only. A T-Clip should then be placed over the direct fixed screw to act as a spacer for the neighbouring board. Please note that Deck boards should be directly fixed to the support rails only in one place.
|
CUTTING UPM PROFI
Normal wood working tools can be used to cut UPM ProFi.
For the perfect end finish:
- Turn the section upside down when cutting.
- Use a small hand plane to chamfer the top edge of the ends of the decking boards
|
INSTALLATION TEMPERATURE
Due to thermal expansion, it is recommended to build the entire decking area at a similar outdoor temperature.

MATERIALS NEEDED
- Decking Boards (28mm x 150mm): 6.6 m for each square metre (1 m²)
- Support Rails: (40 x 60mm) or timber joists (45mm x 145mm or 50mm x 150mm)
- Cover Strip: 12mm x 66mm or Rail Step: 68mm x 110mm
- Connectors: 17 T-Clips for each square metre (1 m²) or Aluminium Railing
- Screws: Rust proof (4mm x 40mm) 1 piece per T-Clip with enough for first and last decking boards. For aluminium screwing special screws (e.g. 3.9x32mm) A4
|
TOOLS NEEDED
- Power screw driver with long shaft bit (min. 25 mm)
- 5 mm drill bit
- Circular or hand saw
- Aluminium Railing is cut with a hack saw
- Rubber hammer
