Fixing the decking boards

How to fix your composite deck boards properly? Fix one screw directly through the bottom tongue at the middle of each deck board to the subconstruction. Afterwards choose clips or Alu Rails to fix the deck boards on their whole lengths to the subconstruction.

  • Direct fixing screws are used for all UPM ProFi decking boards
  • T-Clips are for UPM ProFi Piazza Pro, Deck 150 and Terra 127 whereas Wing Clips are used for fixing of UPM ProFi Piazza One deck boards
  • Alu Rails are available for UPM ProFi Deck 150 or alternatively for UPM ProFi Piazza One deck boards
  • Start Clips are also dependant on the selected boards
  • Additional screws can be used based on the subconstruction material: special screws for composite, aluminium and timber joists

Direct fixing

To ensure that the deck boards remain aligned, fix one screw directly through the bottom tongue at the middle of each decking board. The direct fixing screw is used for all UPM ProFi decking boards.

The repeated expansion and contraction over time may result in deck boards slightly shifting from their original location. It is therefore mandatory to fix one screw directly through the bottom tongue at the middle of each deck board. This single direct fixing of the deck board to the support rail will ensure that the expansion & contraction can still occur at both ends, but that the board itself stays in place. The fixing screws of the different boards in a row should be screwed into the same support rail.

Direct fixing of a deck board with more than one screw must not be done as it will inhibit the normal thermal expansion and contraction and may cause distortion.

Fixing of deck boards with clips

UPM ProFi T-Clips allow the normal thermal expansion and contraction to occur. T-Clips are used with UPM ProFi Piazza Pro, Deck 150, Terra 127 and Patio 120.

UPM ProFi Piazza One boards with edge grooves allow the use of UPM ProFi Wing Clips for hidden fastening. Slide the Wing Clips firmly into the groove of the first board above every supporting joist. Take the next board and slide to the clip tabs, pressing it firmly into place. Screw the clips to the joists so that the screw head is even with the clip surface.

Fixing deck boards with alu rail

Alu rail is the alternative fixing instead of clips. UPM ProFi Alu Rail allows the normal thermal expansion and contraction to occur. Warmer climates require installation with alu rail only to avoid the deck boards bending excessively when hot.

Fixing with UPM ProFi Alu Rail provides a closed deck surface and creates a stronger structure for commercial applications. Alu rail is available for the use with UPM ProFi Piazza One or alternatively with UPM ProFi Deck 150.

Slide the alu rail firmly into the groove of the first board. Take the next board pressing it firmly into place. Screw the alu rail to the joists so that the screw head is even with the alu rail surface.

Fixing first / last deck boards with UPM ProFi Start Clip

UPM ProFi Start Clips are used for fixing the first and last deck boards.

Different start clips are used for UPM ProFi Piazza Pro, Deck 150, Terra 127 and Patio 120 or alternatively for UPM ProFi Piazza One.
